What are haemorrhoids?
The word 'haemorrhoids' is derived from two ancient Greek words for 'blood' (haima) and 'flow' (rhoos), which very accurately describe the main symptom of the condition, namely blood flowing. It is common to notice blood after a bowel movement in case of haemorrhoid.
Also referred to colloquially as 'piles', haemorrhoids are in fact small blood vessels in and around the anus and rectum that distend when blood flow back to the heart is not as quick as it should be. These are also referred as varicose veins.
Haemorrhoids are of the following three types:
- Internal haemorrhoids
- External haemorrhoids
- Prolapsed haemorrhoids
Internal haemorrhoids are inside the body and are usually painless. However, they tend to bleed. External haemorrhoids appear on the outside of the anus while prolapsed haemorrhoids occur where the internal veins are pushed to the outside of the body through the anus and thus, these are the most painful and severest in form.
Haemorrhoid generally develops over a period and is a common rectal problem. As many as 300,000 people are treated in Australia for haemorrhoids every year. In certain severe cases, haemorrhoid surgery may be necessary.
How do they develop?
The following factors and conditions can make people more prone to develop haemorrhoids:
- Aged 50+
- Pregnancy
- Overweight
- Constipation (which results in straining)
- Doing heavy manual work
- Sitting on hard surfaces (including the toilet itself) for long periods
You can minimize the pain associated with haemorrhoids by:
- Not straining yourself during a bowel movement
- Not spending too much time sitting on hard surfaces
- Not rubbing the area around your anus when wiping (pat the area instead)
- Avoiding the use of dry toilet paper (use baby wipes or wet wipes instead)
If you notice any symptoms of haemorrhoid or feel that you are suffering from haemorrhoids, it is important to consult and have any bleeding from the rectum or anus checked by a doctor, to rule out other causes, including bowel cancer.
